I had the pleasure of leading a lectio divina on the gospel for this coming Sunday with the little group of adults in our deanery preparing for confirmation early next month. They caught the spirit of the readings and noted the people's openness to respond by making changes--"What should we do?" What John suggests is within our reach, it is ordinary, it is right relationship.

Feelings: (besides groggy) The gospel has an inviting feel for me. Yes I feel invited, accepted, and fortunate. I think the strongest feeling is fortunate. That fortunate feeling is pretty strong these days after surgery. The care of friends has strengthened that, and the gospel reading has brought it to light.

the link between death and life...

during a Mass for a long-time parishioner who died recently, we heard "for your faithful, O Lord, life is changed, not taken away...when our mortal bodies lie in dust, we gain an everlasting inheritance." this certainly applied to Mary Rainey!

actually, though, the name of this feast isn't too comforting to me...I feel drawn to pray for the not-so-faithful departed, that as their journey into the heart of mystery continues, they will know the same promise.

Having been involved in vocation work for the Province of Pacific for some time, it was easy to say "yes" to a request to get a vocation awareness ministry started in my new parish. I am trying not to be the primary doer in this ministry, but rather to suggest, facilitate, assist the dedicated members of the ministry. As I plan for the second meeting this coming week, I will be mindful of my role as servant.

I feel ready to accept whatever the cup holds, but at the same time I feel apprehensive.

Trinity Sunday...

this is a hard feast for me to have feelings about,
or to listen for actions to surface.

I may be imagining it, but I think there are now options for the 3 year liturgical cycle.
the USCCB only has one set of readings, though, so I'll have to check.

scripture has hints of the Trinity, but for me it clearly fits into the category of truth being perceived and expressed more clearly as the community ponders the mystery. so here we have a God that is in essence relational, just as we in the divine image are in essence relational.

Because of the uncertainty in my life right now related to my move from Alameda to Vallejo - espcecially as it affects ministry and community involvement, I am listening and waiting for the Spirit to guide me. Pentecost!

Such a rich feast, in color, in the texts, and in the event.

Pentecost, or "the Spirit" get invoked as a foundation or a rationale for so many things.
I've done it myself, and probably won't always be able to resist the temptation in the future.

I'm not looking forward to hearing "what Catholics are terrible at" or "what we need to do,"
but I am looking forward to some moments of prayer giving thanks,
probably looking around at the people gathered from all the nations.
I am blessed to live in an area with the same richness of people
as Jerusalem all those years ago.

The Pentecost Gospel of John Chapter 15: 26-27; 16: 12-15 reminds me that when the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide us to all truth. To live truth is a challenge, and I feel comforted by the promise of the Holy Spirit as my guide.

I am blessed to be hearing very good preaching these days. I will listen very carefully to Fr. Leon's or Fr. Cesar's homily for Ascension. I am also cognizant of the fact that I have been invited to become a Missionary and to join in the preaching or reflecting at certain Precious Blood Missions. I will listen to homilies in light of this new privilege and will continue to listen in order to advance on the journey toward a closer relationship with Jesus.

In Mark's Gospel for Ascension, I hear that Jesus told his disciples to proclaim the gospel to every creature and that they went forth and preached everywhere. I feel great joy to hear this and profound gratitude for the preaching that has stirred my soul and motivated me to work at becoming a better person.

the one that calls out to me this week is the one from ephesians 4

which calls us to "grow into the full stature of Christ"

one Lord, one faith, one baptism"

these are the challenges and the vision that gives life for me this week

As I consider an action for this reading, I am well aware that the action in and of itself is not what is important. It is not what we do but who we are and how we live out our lives as Christians. The fruit that we bear comes from the quality of the love that drives us.This leads me to consider relationships - especially those that I have neglected during this very busy and stressful time. I will work to renew those relationships this week.

"God shows no partiality." in Acts, the cultural issues are not yet explicit, but I call this to mind in the midst of a wealth of cultures and communication styles in Alameda. we have challenges that feel of the same order as those experienced by Peter.

this Acts reading is also a great comfort to me in terms of gender.

Jesus calls us friends, which feels so inclusive and mutual and empowering to me. as is the joy of the gospel of John, where this long farewell address is to disciples. unnamed and unnumbered, disciples includes us all.

I get a sense that there really is something about the death

so often, we go for the Resurrection,

there's something about the cross
that I can't yet put into words.
